A delightful 19th century treasure that’s sure to turn heads!
Crafted circa 1840’s in a stunning 18 carat gold and sterling silver, this Paste Riviere necklace is a one of a kind adornment. The construction is impeccable, with dozens of glimmering paste jewels bezel set along the geometric sterling silver terminals. The resulting silhouette is timeless yet glamorous – evoking a Gothic Revivalist flair.
And indeed, the Romantic Period in France was dominated by interests in the gothic and the pastoral. This necklace sees both a pastoral focus (as this type of jewelry is associated with the French Provencal region) as well as a romanticization of the past – with the revival of the 18th century foil back vision of court jewelry on a budget.
Paste rivieres from this period are so elusive to the modern collector, and reveal so much about the artistic sensibilities of the 19th century. It is a rare treat indeed to be able to bring one to market, as this would make a magnificent addition to any antique or art history collection!
