Glamorous and fabulous!
A French treasure from the height of the 18th century, this Cut Steel and Garnot Gallon Adornment is an absolute stunner. Just marvel at that impeccable craftwork – the cut steel has been fashioned into a botanical motif, with flowers book-ending the edges, and scrolling foliate designs haloing the center element.
The piece de resistance is of course, this delightful red Garnet stone dangling from the center element. The stone glimmers with a sharp depth, which juxtaposes beautifully against the steel ornamentals.
This adornment is interestingly designed in the style of Madame Du Barry’s famous jewels. A special detail, as Du Barry was renowned for her lavish and opulent jewels – often commissioned by King Louis XV himself! And indeed, this piece embodies all the trending characteristics of mid 1700’s jewelry – particularly the cut steel.
When King Louis XV ordered jewelry to be donated to the state in order to fund France’s participation in the Seven Years War, cut steel became highly en vogue within the wealthy and affluent communities, as replacement for their donated jewels. No doubt an aristocrat would have lovingly worn a piece like this along a ribboned choker!
With its stunning construction and storied history, this is a wonderful addition to any antique jewelry collection!
