Victorian Sterling Silver & Peruzzi Cut Diamond Earrings | .40ctw | Continental European c.1850-1870
Peculiar little clovers with lovely long drops serve as the frame for delectable Peruzzi-cut diamonds. The lore of the Peruzzi diamond is that it comes from the Renaissance Italian method of diamond cutting — with points and angles developed in the workshops of the period, resulting in a stone of remarkable character and depth quite unlike any modern cut.
These beauties are likely continental European, with what might be diamonds that pre-date the settings; the work is wonderful, with accent diamonds hiding in the leaves that tumble from the buttercup set clovers at the tops. This pair is reminiscent of the work seen in the Viennese ruby and emerald earrings we enjoyed last month, here at the Curio. I'm hosting an onging investigation to find a similar pair in germanic or Viennese portraiture of the mid 1850's...
