Few pieces of jewelry have captured my heart quite like this bangle has. As though minted by wood nymphs in an enchanted garden, this feather light, late 19th century Belle Epoque bracelet with its scrolling Art Nouveau etching is a perfect example of late 19th to early 20th century transitional jewelry. Made by the iconic WIlliam Barthman Firm, the Barthman family held a jewelry and watch shop address at 20 Broad Street, known for the Clock In The Sidewalk (famously photographed by the beloved NYC street photographer Ida Wyman in 1947, shown in the image appendix)
The french lavender amethyst crowns the bangle and is flanked by bezel set old European diamonds, which form the centers of marigolds in the fluid etching that covers every millimeter of exterior space. I imagine this bracelet made excellent use of New Port mansion life that its first owner enjoyed-- perhaps flashing on a debutante’s wrist over dinner, kept safe as an heirloom in the 1920’s, lost in a precarious poker bet in the 1950’s, then buried in a safe for more than half a century. I am certain she will capture the fancy of her new owner with delight every time they discover her in their jewelry box.
