Queen Victoria put snake jewelry under the fashion spotlight when her husband-to-be, Prince Albert, bought her a snake engagement ring, with an emerald (her birthstone) embedded into it. The symbol of the snake was very popular in the Victorian era, used in both love and mourning jewelry alike to symbolize 'eternity'.

While it has a long history, the pinnacle of Whitby jet's use was in Victorian England when it was fashioned into black jewelry that became popular for mourning the death of a loved one as well as just a stunning piece of jewelry, of course. Carved Whitby jet with garnet eyes, this is one of the most exceptional chokers The Curio has ever seen.
