An outrageous pair of late 18th century Iberian Peninsula earrings, most likely Catalan, set with Colombian emeralds, imported from the "New World" at the time of their creation.
The emeralds total an estimated 4.26ctw and the diamonds 1.24ctw, all set in a combination of 18ct gold and sterling silver in the magnificent Iberian (likely Catalan) manner: heavy, confident, deeply decorative. Each earring weighs an extraordinary 20.35 grams. The wonderful detail of sentimental forget-me-not flowers highlighted in diamonds on each earring is incomperable, a deeply personal touch in jewels of this scale and age. For a visual reference point, see page 107 of Clare Phillips' Jewellery from Antiquity to the Present, which illustrates a stomacher of similar Iberian origin, though of an earlier period, we've included a scan. These earrings are in that lineage.
