Edwardian Opal & Diamond Négligée Necklace | 18ct & Platinum | Original Box | English c.1910
The format of the négligée has become a Curio favorite — playfully dipping the eye between two asymmetrical, but nearly identical drops, here celebrating a central circular opal. This necklace has some of the finest, most saturated opals I've handled this month; and I've handled a lot of opals this month!
I enjoyed that the stones are not perfectly round, indicating that the lapidary originally entrusted with the important task of finding the stones' best angles, executed on a vision of the finest material only — if there was matrix or other imperfection, it was joyously edited out in the polishing process.
The diamonds are puffy old mines, truly incredible that this amount of fire, brilliance, and facet could be extracted from stones less than 20 points each. Overall made even more delectable by the original, perfectly fitted box from Sydney J. Sheppard Jewelers, Bournemouth, that this négligée has been passed down through time within. No one had the heart to separate them. Truly a bonbon, disguised as a jewel.
