Jewelry and other forms of art during the Edwardian era were elaborate and decorative. Though the 20th century had begun, the Victorian influence was still strong, and this was reflected in the era’s classic, feminine patterns, including jewelry with hearts, flowers, and lacy filigree.
Gemstones, especially in bar brooches in this time, were used as the center stone, accompanied by diamonds or other gems. This gorgeous example features an octagonal-cut peridot in the center with eight pearls that surround it. Four of the pearls accentuate the Maltese cross detail. A Maltese Cross is an 8-pointed cross with 2-point pairs forming v-shapes on the 4 equilateral arms of the cross. The eight points on the cross denote the eight obligations of the order of St. John, namely “to live in truth, have faith, repent one’s sins, give proof of humility, love justice be merciful, be sincere and whole-hearted, and to endure persecution.
As if that was not enough symbolism, peridot and pearl bring in some more for you. Known as the stone of compassion, peridot calms anger by giving renewal to all things. On the other hand, pearls are the ultimate symbol of wisdom. Valued for their calming effects, pearls represent serenity and convey a sense of safety.
