A jaw-dropping adornment that’s certain to turn heads!
We could wax poetic about this gorgeous 19th century bow brooch for hours. Possibly French in origin, this brooch embodies Victorian glamour, with a marvelous construction that feels both timeless, yet deliciously decadent in a way that 19th century jewelry does best.
Crafted circa 1890 in sterling silver, this brooch features stunning ribbons of 18 carat gold threaded through the brooch to create a lovely bow shape. Equally stunning are the large rose-cut diamonds bezel set at each corner of the bow brooch; no matter how you choose to pin this brooch, the diamonds glint beautifully in the light.
The pièce de resistance is the diamond drop dangling from the bottom – it adds a touch of romance to the silhouette, as well as sparkle!
The bow details on this brooch are exceptional, especially when you take into account the rich history of bow symbolism in the decorative arts. Bow motifs have been a mainstay of jewelry design since its earliest days, with stylistic elements that reflect the society of each era. During the reign of King Louis XIV in the 18th century, bows were even used as “ribbon language”, serving to communicate one’s availability for matrimony. Très romantique!
Personally, we here at the curio adore this big bow brooch! The late 19th century fascination with transforming textile elements like bows into eternally beautiful metal-worked jewels has a special, socio-political overture towards the feminine and feminine tastes.
We personally theorize that, as women controlled more of the household outcome – and therefore, more ability to commission jewelry – bow jewelry became highly en vogue, and a mainstay of decorative fashion. This brooch is a remarkable example of these sensibilities, which is super fascinating!
With its unique design and simply divine construction, this brooch is sure to be a favored piece you pick up again and again! Perfect for any antique jewelry collection!
