Original 18th Century French Pearl and Garnet Earrings in Sterling Silver

The heavy, symmetrical, and mostly gold jewelry of the 17th century slowly gave way to the lighter, more asymmetrical, and organic styles of the 18th century. Most jewelry made during this period featured openwork designs that were just as beautiful as the metal used to make them and the jewels set within them. The jewelry of the 18th century was also elegant, ornate, and purposeful to the wearer as a symbol of status and personal style.

Silver especially enjoyed great popularity in the 1700s, as it complimented the plethora of diamonds and other gemstones. The lightness and brightness of silver reflected and accented various cuts of gems and paired well with the softer pastel-colored fabrics that became popular with nobility and upper-class individuals.

This lovely pair of earrings features three small pearls, a large central pearl, and a deliciously red plethora of garnets atop and in between pearls. In gold, these would be in the $5-6K range, but these babes are vermeille and extremely historically important. Pearls are the ultimate symbol for wisdom, while garnet is an ancient symbol of friendship.
