Garnet and Pearl Stick Pin

Victorian jewelry is as complex in its symbolism, sentiment, and design as the fashion, architecture, and decor of the time. Worn as an ornament, a love token, or a remembrance, jewelry not only completed the well-dressed lady’s costume but also denoted her position in society, her marital status, and her sense of self.

Stickpins’ traditional purpose was to secure a tie or scarf but they are now currently worn as a lapel ornament, either singly or in groups. The motif atop these pins can vary widely from a simple pearl or gemstone to whimsical designs, just about anything. Stickpins all have one thing in common, the long pin that completes them. This pin can be straight or twisted (for security) and sometimes has a protective cap to place over the pointed end to help keep the pin in place. 

A cabochon garnet takes center stage in this delicious example with a most peculiar Art Nouveau setting. The movement of the jewel is astonishing; the gold captures the movement of opposing rivers swirling around the stones; the bezel-set garnet glowing from within, the spike set pearl lustrously observing.
