This magnificent Perpignan garnet rivière, circa 1830, is a tour de force for the garnet connoisseur. Composed of 41 principal rose-cut garnets, each suspending its own articulated drop, the necklace forms a continuous fringe of movement—81 stones in total—that flicker and glow with every turn of the head.
Each garnet is closed-back and foiled, a defining characteristic of traditional work from Perpignan in southern France, where jewelers perfected the art of coaxing extraordinary depth from these richly colored stones. The garnets range from 7 mm to 13 mm, with the fringe drops at approximately 4 mm, creating a beautifully graduated and fluid silhouette along the neckline.
The necklace is crafted in 18ct gold, with a cleverly concealed tongue-and-groove clasp hidden beneath a garnet, preserving the uninterrupted rhythm of the design. The clasp itself is hallmarked, as expected for a piece of this quality.
There is a theatricality to this necklace—a certain commedia dell’arte of fine 19th century quality.
