Not all French jewelry of the 18th c is fanciful or pretentious— some of it, luckily, is both! A wildly colorful portrait of a whimsical young woman in a hat that is surely too large for her, proudly sits in a paste studded, garlanded frame. This stunning 18th Century portrait example features her paste "diamonds" in the portait as well! Providing her with a crown, and earrings, I cannot resist a jewel that also wears jewels! Pictured with blue ribbons streaming from her yellow and black striped chapeau with a black plume, voluminous hair and red cheeks blooming like the bouquet in her bosom! Her ensemble firmly dares her to the 1770’s, with the military tilt to her red gown with white fichu and black ribbon details down the stomacher— it is simply beguiling to see this merry sitter gaze delightedly at the viewer.
