Exceptional 19th Century Cameo of Medusa in Coral

Breathtaking and magical, this rare piece is a surrender from our personal collection! Crafted circa 1850 in 14 carat gold, this outstanding cameo features the striking visage of Medusa, set against a delicately blushing pink conch shell.

A fine example of 19th century craftspersonship, this piece is full of whimsical detail: just look at the gorgeous rendering of Medusa’s face! Her serpentine hair swirls around her in an intricate halo, and each facial feature has been lovingly hand-carved with precision. Her expression seems to leap out at you, rueful and lost in reverie.

At the bottom of this cameo is a beautiful delicate gold chain upon which a pearl drop stone sits cradled. Turn the brooch around to reveal a beautiful gold backing, constructed in an almost fleur-de-lis shape. These elements beautifully elevate the silhouette, adding a dash of dreamy playfulness to the artistry.

But one of the most particularly rare features of this cameo are the diving pair of dolphins, seen above Medusa’s face, which are accented by the typical Medusa wings that iconically crown our favorite Gorgon.

A piece that is truly museum-worthy, and perfect for any art historian or antique jewelry lover’s collection!
