Cupid and Psyche appear in the world of 19th century jewelry in a plethora of forms, greatly in gratitude to the publishing of 50 copies of Psyche, an epic a six-canto allegorical poem in Spenserian stanzas recounting the classical tale, by Irish poet Mary Tighe in 1805. Her rendition pulls heavily from Apuleius, but is imbued with little details which point to Cupid's and Psyche's similarities. Psyche along with other works by Tighe were republished posthumously in 1811, gaining popularity and establishing her literary reputation.
This particularly large cameo rendition of Psyche is remarkable, not only due to its size but its depiction of her as a teen; with her lingering baby chub, sensually draped fabrics and fluttering petite wings, she’s giving adolescence. In a gold filled setting, this snapshot of Psyche is a Juliette of sorts, perhaps depicting her during her trials demanded by Cupid’s mother, Venus.
