An incredible Victorian essex crystal of a beautiful grouse circa 1890. This extremely fine Essex was created utilizing the classic technique of reverse intaglio rendering; to create the sense of three dimensionality, the subject was carved in intaglio, then painted in reverse, with highlights first, and base colors last. It is then pearled with a thin slab of mother of pearl, and presented inverted, so that a cabochon is cut of the forward facing rock crystal, then set bezeled. This outstanding example shows the most beautiful color and painting of a male grouse with a nearly iridescent body, yellow neck, and brown wings with cropped tail. See image appendix for more. 

Wonderfully refashioned, likely from a cufflink into a ring, this example is neatly marked with a Victorian cartouche hallmark on the reverse. This Essex Crystal dates to the 1890’s when hunting and animal jewels were rudimentary equipage to the modern wardrobe.
