Earrings were essential in the Grand Period of Victorian-era jewelry but their size and style fluctuated widely throughout the period. Archaeological revival gold amphorae and drops decorated with granulation, twisted wire, and rosettes dominated earring motifs. Hoops, drops, crosses, flowers, and stars were other favored subjects for an earring design.

 

A revolution in jewelry called secondary jewelry or costume jewelry was in full swing. Gas and steam engines found their way into jewelry workshops and low karat gold.
