In classical mythology, Cupid is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction, and affection. He is often portrayed as the son of the love goddess, Venus, and the god of war, Mars... and as such, we know he, and his cherubic cohort churned up some romantic mischeif whenever the opportunity presented itself. 

The French Napoleon III period loved romantic depictions of classical Greek and Roman scenes, and this little cherub is a wonderful example of the trend.
