Gorgeous and timeless!
This 18th century Stuart posy ring is a rare and remarkable example! Crafted circa 1700 in a vibrant 22 carat gold, this ring embodies the mystical and romantic essence that posy rings have been historically renowned for.
A medieval era creation, posy rings were gold finger rings that possessed a short inscription on the exterior or interior of their surface. It was common for these rings to possess hidden messages, further adding onto their intrigue.
On this ring in particular are several engravings, revealing not only its original intent, but its storied history through time as it’s been passed on from owner to owner. On the interior of the ring is the hallmark “VR”, which came from a resale in the 19th century. But alongside the hallmark is a more sentimental inscription, engraved in a gorgeous typeface: “the love is all”. How romantic!
It cannot be said whom the original recipient of this ring was, but one cannot deny the sweet romanticism of the inscription. Perhaps this ring was commissioned for a beloved paramour, or even a sweet relation?
Either way, the band remains remarkable. As it stands now, this ring would make for an outstanding love token, as it really communicates a poetic sentiment. Many posy rings are quite religious in their inscriptions, so it is rare and special to find one that is so romantic. The presence of the retailer’s hallmark alongside the inscription only further reminds us that these bands have always been coveted.
A magnificent addition to any antique jewelry collection!
