An outstanding 19th century treasure!

Crafted circa 1840 in a brilliant 18 carat gold, this English Blue Enamel and Diamond Snake Necklace is one of the rarest pieces we’ve ever had!

There is truly so much to marvel at with this example: between the stunning deep Blue Enamel of the snake body, its diamond encrusted head and gleaming Garnet eyes, and the wonderful gold chain, this necklace is simply a feast for the eyes!

The construction is remarkable, a wonderful example of fine English Victorian artistry; that’s no surprise, as this snake necklace is reminiscent of Queen Victoria’s iconic engagement ring, gifted by her paramour Prince Albert. Victoria’s ring featured a coiled snake set with emerald, diamond, and ruby accents along its crown.

And indeed, the snake on this necklace embodies those characteristics, especially with the bejeweled Garnet eyes, and the crown of diamonds sparkling atop its head. What makes this snake extra rare is that it is holding a flower in its mouth instead of a heart. A curious detail that is pure Victorian iconography, especially when taking into the consideration the popularity of using the language of flowers in decorative pieces.

This necklace was very likely a massive engagement gift, or love token. What a lucky paramour the original owner must have been! Today, this would make a marvelous addition to any antique jewelry collection – a perfect treasure for the connoisseur and art historian alike!
