Did you know that the witch’s heart shape dates back to the 15th century? It is, in fact, a Scottish symbol, some call it the Luckenbooth heart; for small talismanic hearts with curved tails were sold at stalls of Edinburgh markets. Sellers would warn passersby that babies are best kept with Luckenbooth hearts on their blankets, to ward off the ill will of dark magic… In the 18th century, brooches in the Witch’s shape were given as tokens, to say that the giver had been bewitched by the receiver. This notion is perhaps the genesis of Mr. Darcy’s penultimate proclamation in Pride and Prejudice— as he says to Elizabeth “you have bewitched me, body and soul.”

A stunning 15ct example in particularly yellow gold circa 1870- English in origin, this particular example is beautifully graduated with a lovely inverted diamond shape at the top of the heart. In shocking, near mint condition, this delightful Persian turquoise example is truly a heartbreaker.
