A special English snake bangle featuring a perfectly articulated serpent head and patented steel coil technology. This magnificent Cleopatra bangle is circa 1960 and simply immaculate. A collector’s piece with a textured body, this lightweight yet substantial example is museum quality, nearly untouched by time-- a fabulous example of the 1960's Victorian revival. The snake is a classic symbol of eternality, an emblem of the circle of life, and insignia of love.
The term Cleopatra jewelry for snake pieces which wrap around the body, comes from the finale of the great classical tragedy of Cleopatra, who had poisonous Asps delivered to her room after the news of Marc Anthony's death. The vernacular arose in the 19th century, the popularity of these jewels can be seen in the portraits of society women by artists like Ingres-- see the Cleopatra ring worn by the portrait of the Comtesse d'Haussenville.
